Tyger! Tyger!
Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forest of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder, and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?
What the hammer and what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare it's deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did he smile, his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?
Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forest of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
- The Tyger (By William Blake)

Gloomily, Corwin stared at the small lake where the Primal Pattern of Amber once stood, now but a few magical traceries reflected beneath the smooth surface of the water. By his side a small, mousey haired girl, looking perhaps half his age, clung to him against the cold. They had both been through a lot - fought like tigers at times - but had found a place where they could be together in peace. A shame this were not true for the rest of reality.
"I failed," he said, "I should have known Brand had the jewel. Better I had died fighting him and his hateful brood, along with the rest of my brave soldiers."
"Don't be too hard on yourself," Dara replied, her voice a mere whisper. "You couldn't have known."
"Men's lives." He growled.
"Shadows." Said she.
He sighed. "Greyswandir broken. That loss was wounded me more than any. I had oft wondered why Father had chosen to give Brand Werewindle, not Bleys. He had no art to wield it."
"Inscribing the matrix changed him, made him stronger. More like his father, perhaps..."
"No." Corwin snapped, and there was silence.
A ripple disturbed the lake, and a worried frown crossed his brow. Sword instantly in hand, he stood and paced the lakeside, ruefully noticing the plain dull surface of the weapon he now held. The wind was steady now, and as he watched, the glowing broken image of the Pattern was gradually obscured by wavelets until only its aura remained visible.
Suddenly, a blade rose from the water, thrust by a woman's hand from the centre of the Pattern. With a casual flick of the wrist, the silvery scaled arm tossed it towards him, and he caught it reflexively in his off-hand. The arm waved and sank as he marvelled at the sword he beheld - Greyswandir reforged. Triumphantly he raised it aloft, swore to use it to restore what was lost. He turned, smiling, to where Dara had sat, only to find she had gone.
Already deep in Shadow, taking a form he would not know, never once looking back. She knew the look that sparked in his eye as the sun caught the light of the Pattern in that spinning rapier. She knew what it meant, and the driving ambition that followed it. She had hoped that ambition had died with Eric, but Corwin had glimpsed Amber's crown from the foot of the Jade Citadel, and nothing would stop him going back for it.
